Question about Greg

Does anyone know the canon reason, or a realistically canon reason, for Greg's bad mood in High and Low? It's for a fic I'm writing in a series about Greg's journey from lab tech to CSI. So I'm trying to keep the things I use from the eps as close to realistically canon as I can. The couple of ideas I have could work but they don't feel quite right. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
