First of all, I think Character and Actor bashing should be left to *personal journals.*

He is obviously doing something right, Miami's become a huge hit in the US!

You may not like either the character ir the man...doesn't mean other do. Some people adore both men. Horatio's confidence and ego are what make him good at what he does...As much as we haven't seen his entire career, we have to assume he earnt the position which he is in, we also know he deals alot with behind the scenes which we don't see.

He's not a selfish man, he cares for him team, and for others quiet a bit.

And the sunglasses? Do you know that we are supposed to wear them to protect our eyes? Just like sunscreen..hurts our eyes just like our skin. So what if he wears them...I think Grissom's facial hair wasn't attractive liek some however, others thought it looked awesome...but I didn't go around bashing him or Billy...

I meant the Actor bashing in the article you linked, not directly your words...sorry for the confussion.

I agree with lillian... on the character/actor bashing... because I personally find Horatio Caine to be by far the most complex of characters, sure in ways he's similar to Mac and Grissom in his approaches, but he is by far my favorite Supervisor. He's caring, he's not selfish - he puts his team first (which Mac and Grissom also do) and I think his past not only helps gives him insight, but warning for future endevours.

And heh, Horatio's sunglasses routine? Well, you need to remember that they're in Miami and it can easily get into the 90's to 100's, and that's good protection for your eyes too. He's also not the only one who wears them and I personally love him with them on, something about him standing there with his hands on his hips, wind tossing his red hair... mm.

But I digress. Simply put, to each their own... it's fine if you don't like them, that's your choice, but it should be left to your own journal and not posted in a community.

Horatio Caine is not complex. He's so one-dimensional it makes my teeth hurt, and is the reason I stopped watching Miami. He does the same things over and over again, episode after episode.

The point with the sunglasses is that he makes such a big show of it - normal people manage to take off/put on theirs without having to make a dramatic pause.

He routinely condescends to both his co-workers and the suspects/victims he talks to - his tone of voice, and the fact that he seems to find it impossible to make eye contact with the person he's speaking to.

I've seen he process evidence about once, but as he's the team leader he can probably be forgiven that. That fact that he shows up at a scene, stands there and looks around a bit, plays with his sunglasses/badge, tells everyone else what to do then wanders off again week after week does not endear me to him at all.

He's a caricature, not a characater, and Miami's viewing figures continue to astound me because personally I find it painful to watch because of him.

Neh, he's the reason I can't bear to watch the show. Well, a major one, anyway. The earth raper Hummer he uses and the yellow filter round out the top three. Stupid cases are #4.

Eh, I think this is a good a place as any to vent about characters. (I do notice that the people objecting love his character, but hey, whatever.)

I realize Florida is sunny, which is why you should wear sunglasses. But if you're so concerned about your eyes, you shouldn't constantly over dramatically remove them, should you.

Yeah, I don't like him either. I tried watching Miami, and found that I couldn't, because of him. I tried, I really did, but I found I was spending far too much time agitated at a fucking tv show to really justify it. Vegas and NY are great, though.

He's the reason I don't watch CSI Miami, too. He annoyed me when he was in NYPD Blue and he's annoying on this show too. It's a matter of personal preference, of course, but I don't see what's wrong about talking about why you dislike a character on this board--after all, you can't like everyone, can you? **cough, cough, Catherine Willows, the only person who understands what motherhood is all about, cough, cough**

Also, I realize that wearing sunglasses in Miami is not just a fashion statement, especially for a blue-eyed person, but there does seem to be quite a bit of emphasis paid to Caine's putting-on and taking-off of said sunglasses. If I ever bother to watch it again, I'm sure the incidences will be more glaring than ever!

I don't like the character, every crossover he does it's because he made a promise to an underage person (could he please STOP doing that, it's annoying and predictiable), and his purpose on the show seems to be stand and brood. I couldn't bare to watch Miami, mostly because of him.

And the actor, well that's part of the reason I don't like Horatio, the man couldn't act his way out of a paper bag (just my opinion of course).

Seeing as this is a community for the shows, I don't see a problem with saying what you DONT like about one of them. Just my wimpy 2ยข.
Anyway, I don't like Horatio either. I've never really been a big fan of his, but it wasn't until Speed was killed off that I realised I REALLY didn't like Horatio. I stopped watching the show shortly after that. Not really a fan of the actor, either. lol @ him saying NYPD Blue would fail without him and then he left and it did fine. ugh @ arrogant jerk.
Anyone else not like Ryan, too? I don't know. A lot of the characters on CSI: Miami seem so weak to me. A small part of the reason why I stopped watching (other than losing interest/not liking Horatio) was Ryan. I liked him at first but... eh. I don't know. He just seemed like a half-assed, slightly less weird/nerdy Greg Sanders. He may be better now, I don't know. And I don't care to find out.

I have to agree with you about Ryan. IMO Speed was one of the strongest (if not the best) characers on the show and to replace him with someone like Ryan just made the show go downhill.

From: [identity profile] harrywells.livejournal.com
I'm still pissed off at the way they killed Speed, though. He was such a great character and person, yet they make his death his fault because he didn't clean his gun? Come the fuck on =/ Rory Cochrane said that he wanted them to kill him off some other way because the writers can come up with all these crazy murder stories, yet they killed off his character with a gun.

Date: 2006-11-12 01:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lotrangel17.livejournal.com
It's like they wanted to nullify all his good work by having him get killed off that way. All it did was give Horatio another reason to brood.

Date: 2006-11-12 01:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] harrywells.livejournal.com
Yeah =/ It completely took away from his character. I just don't see the whole not-cleaning-his-gun thing as a likely scenario given his personality. Especially not after Horatio gave him the gun cleaning kit.
Speed, how I miss thee.

I agree about Ryan. He's sort of become the scapegoat of the show. He's always making tiny little slipups, like talking to reporters, and then taking the heat. Plus, the way he came into the show was kind of...random.

...and in addition to my comment up there, it bugs the hell out of me that he still calls Ryan 'Mr Wolfe' when everyone else is called by their first name. Especially Frank...Horatio cannot get through a conversation with that man without saying his name at least half a dozen times. Who speaks like that? How often to you say someone's name when you're speaking to them, other than to catch their attention? Does Frank have ADA or something, and have to keep being brought back to focus on what they're doing?

Don't even get me started on the way he 'empathises' with the kids. Because seriously, if I was one of them I'd just punch him on the nose for being so damn condescending - they're kids, not morons. Horatio and kids...it's like NY's staple of model-of-the-week, pops up time and time again - do something different already!

He also started calling him Francis, maybe he is trying to make sure Frank always remembers his name.

Wow, I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one who dosn't really like him.

I've heard it said this way by a friend of mine, "I can never tell if he's trying to look cool or if he just forgot his lines." I think that pretty much summs it up for me. He has one expression and I can almost never tell what he's trying to convy.

That and the sunglasses, I know, it's Miami, it's sunny, I've been to florida before, but give me a break.

Now I'm not going to say anything about the actorbecasue I haven'treally seen him in anything but Miami, but if he acts like he does on camera normally, God bless his co-workers.

I'm not a huge H fan either - the only defence I'll give him is that in the much earlier episodes, he did actually go into the lab and do stuff. Now he just dictates. Argh. And does anyone else find the teapot stance a little annoying? Scene: Criminal: "bla bla bla" Horatio: "I'm going to make sure you get caught" *enter sunglasses* *poses for camera* /Scene.

I totally agree, I completely hate Horatio, too. And I find all the comments made in regards to this post SPOT ON. So, I know they've been said before, but the point needs to be reinforced!
I absolutely can't stand the sunglasses thing, no normal person takes off sunglasses mid-sentence to look at something, then pauses dramatically, begins a new sentence and puts them back on for the punch line. WTF.

Also, while we're on the subject of Horatio talking to people - WHY does he ALWAYS have to begin a sentence with someone's name and then again END it with their name, too? I could understand it when he's out in the field and his whole team is there, it lessens confusion, but being alone in the morgue with Alex, he doesn't always have to say ,
"Alex[PAUSE]what do we have here? [Alex replies] Then we should get a move on, shouldn't we, Alex?"
And another thing, this displayed only when Horatio is talking to a love interest. I don't know if they do it on purpose or not, but why does he always look away (down) from the person he's talking to with that stupid smirk on his face? I understand that he's not wearing sunglasses out of respect or something, so of course he must have another annoying little tick. Grr.

And one last thing - WHY does every single episode have to end with Horatio standing facing away from the camera, wistfully staring at something, one of his hands, having annoyingly moved his jacket, on his hip? It's annoying, and it happens EVERY single episode.

Sorry about the length of that. Thanks for reading.

aren't communities for discussion? debate? opinions? not everyone has to love everything all the time. christ. and you were asking for responses, so it's not like you were ranting with no purpose, which would belong in a personal journal, but this doesn't.

that said, i don't hate horatio. i laugh at him. a lot. he's cheesetastic and i love it. but i can't ever take him seriously.

Oh thank god!! Someone else who watches him for his cheesiness.

it would also seem that despite Alex's numerous years of medical training and practice, he always feels the need to point out the obvious to her (and for those of us living in the UK, I am always reminded of the Silent Witness skit on French and Saunders).

Let me say first that I'm no a huge fan of Horatio, as he is now. But I did like him in the beginning. And, to be honest, I haven't watched Miami in a while, in part because I felt like it went a little in the direction of Soap Opera/Marvel Comics... not that every good show doesn't do that now and then.

Here, though, is my though process on the difference between Grissom (my fave) and Horatio:

H is more of the classical 'cop'. He lives in the vein of Joe Friday and Dick Tracy. Very stark, full of angst and woe and hard lines. The very sunny nature of Miami is exploited by design in that outdoor shots are BRIGHT! And H is dark, in spirit and dress and those glasses. They're a veil he draws over himself. He was very interesting at first, but I think that some of the writers got very caught up in the "Oh! Woe!" King-Lear-Horatio, and they haven't always given the actor the range he could play with the character, instead making him a one-note song. At times.

I like Grissom better. Again, I haven't watched all 7 seasons point by point, but I've watched it more. G isn't a cop-cop like H. He's an academic, a scientist (and I like that because I grew up in a household of academics). Although he's well versed in police procedure, he isn't a cop, and he sees what they do from the outside. He studies people and events, slightly detached. Not always, though, as is the case with Lady Heather, and more recently with the character played by Alan Tudyk. Grissom has his bugs, which I think make more sense to him than people do. His glasses, when he wears them, accentuate his eyes rather than closing them out.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that Grissom is, for some people (like me) more accesible because he's more open and because he observes as we observe. Horatio is so much inside, not only his world but himself, that he can be difficult to access and interpret.

I hope that makes sense.

Well, H actually was a cop. That's how he knows Mac from New York. It was discussed in a few of the episodes. He left New York rather than have to testify against his partner, who's mistress was murdered or soemthing like that (thank god for re-runs, LOL, or I think I would have missed that :)

I actually like Horatio. While he doesn't make me giggle at his lines like Grissom, or really think like Mac, his obvious love for his job, and how much he cares about those that work with him really gets to me.

But yeah, sunglasses thing is a bit overdone, :)

And I miss Speed so much!! I've been watching the AE re-runs just to see him again :)

I love discussions like this. See I love Grissom but my husband thinks hes a pompous ass. So I have to cast him out of the room when I am watching CSI because he sits there and sighs heavily every time Grissom is on. And yeah some of Grissoms lines make me groan. Talk about cheesy. I am an academic too and I like it that finally a show portrays an academic in a more or less positive light (see Ross Geller of Friends for the usual model) Of course he hates catherine more but thats another post.

I dont like Miami at all and its all because of Caruso. he makes my teeth itch.
