This essay has been lingering in the back of my mind since "Bloodlines," the season finale of CSI, aired a few months ago. Something bugged me about the episode, the story and its twisty ending. I watched it several more times before I realized what the problem was -- CSI had jumped the shark. Not just any shark, mind you... it was the MacGyver shark.
Jumping the shark owes its heritage to an episode of Happy Days in which Fonzie overcomes his fear of sharks by waterskiing over a shark. It was a ludicrous story, made even more ridiculous by the presence of Fonzie's leather jacket, cheesy dialogue and canned laugh track. Now, whenever a show reaches new lows of sheer desperation, it's "jumped the shark." Short-lived X-Files spin-off "The Lone Gunmen" parodied this in an episode, and one can read more about other television shows misadventures, typically featuring "special episodes" or ratings-grabbing guest stars, at
Jump the Shark.
